Griptape Residue

I have a relatively expensive foam core skate (Turner) that I removed the grip from ... now it has griptape residue all over it.

Normally, I'd slap the new tape on right over it and no-one would be the wiser. BUT, in this case, the guy who owned it actually gripped it on the bottom. He wanted to change a cambered board into a rockered board. I thought it was supposed to be rockered and that it was a rare one-off. When I removed the tape I was surprised to find wheel wells... he had filled them in with foam c-blocks that created a concave for his foot, and hid the fact that there were wheel wells. He actually sold it to me as a rare one off. No such thing. Nice guy.

I want to go back to cambered. (among other things I want to see his face when I say "You mean THIS Turner?")

So I need this crap off the bottom. This being a foam core, I don't want to use anything harsh on it. I need something to remove the goo that will not damage the gel coat. Can't scotch-bite it or pour massive quantities of muriatic acid on it... or whatever... (kind of kidding about that)

Whatever I use, I'll test on a small spot in an out of the way place... Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Confused Woof, you've got a dilema... The only thing I could think of is maybe trying a little rubbing alcohol, ir nail polish remover... Be careful and do a test like you said! THat sucks that the kook deceived you like that. Was this an e-bay purchase, or did he actually have the cajones to do this to you f2f ? Let us know how it turns out, and what worked... Rolling Eyes

More like the latter, though all through email, etc. The slalom community is very small. No more than 1000 guys and far fewer than that out there posting. He posted on a forum... I threw my name in for one of two boards I was interested in. He sold those two and came back to me offering this one. Almost a bait and switch. He is a pretty well known guy. Pretty highly ranked, though in decline. I won't name names. I refuse to get all pissed. Caveat emptor. For this one lousy deal I have a hundred good ones. Skaters are generally an honest bunch I think. And nice. A**h*les are a cost of doing business. Laughing

I will let you know wht works. I am going to try a citrus cleaner/degreaser. Actually, alchohol is a good idea too. I'll start there and let you know. Then I have to figure out how to grip it since on the top the rails are "rolled."

Thanks.

Confused I've also heard of people using lighter fluid, the kind for lighters... When you get the board all gripped and put together, post some pics and post them in the Quiver section... BTW, we are adding a catagory for Hills, for slalom, carving and bombing! Razz

Lighter fluid... hmmm... right. A friend of mine used to use that to remove bumper sticker residue from car bumpers. I think that's a really good bet. In plastic bumpers with paint you are talking about a relatively sensitive thing too... I'll start there. It's a good idea.

I'll post pics of my entire quiver eventually. I have a lot of slalom boards but some BDS, DT, and some decent vintage stuff as well.

Glad to hear about the forum. are you thinking of doing a Buy Sell trade area as well?

Very Happy Woof, I added a buy, sell & trade as a subcatagory in the Resources section of the Skate area... Wink

Cool. Keepin' it in the family... I have a few things coming up. probably not too much of interest here, but I'd still love to give Sober Skaters first crack...

There was a thread on the ih8mud forums (Toyota Land Cruiser Forum) I will see if I can find it. Had a lot of good ideas for removing stickers from stuff that could not be damaged I will see what he used and post it.

It was lighter fluid.

Then it's settled. I'll go buy a can of zippo fluid tomorrow as I will have a litle time to work on this. I do recall a friend using this stuff, so great suggestion.

Brilliant!

Lighter fluid was the trick. Not EASY work, but it was done in about 25 minutes. One more buffing and I'll tape it (on the other side this time).

Smile Woof, I'm glad it worked! Now you need to take those pics and show us your wood like you promised big boy! Shocked

Here are pics of the final project. A Turner Aurora foamy. Dressed it like a 70's Turner Fullnose, which is the obvious inspiration for this board.
